This play gives a feel for Ireland in transition after WWI and before WWII. It also queries the differences between primitive beliefs and the more judgmental and rigid beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church which came to Ireland in the 1400s and supplanted and forbade the Celtic beliefs. The playwright also hints at dangers in the modern political world. I suggest reading the play aloud for the full comprehension. After all it was written to be spoken aloud. And if you want to watch the movie version with Meryl Streep, watch it first before reading the play which gives greater complexity. The movie is good though, and can be watched for free on You-Tube.
