It just arrived yesterday and I cannot remember a CD that I have liked better in the first few moments. For the uninitiated, this Stereolab record sounds like Dave Brubeck heading from the north, Brazil 66 from the south, The Cardigans heading from east all colliding with a mobile digital telephone switching station. There are real instruments here and real musicians that coalesce into something decidedly digital, but not the digital of today's techno but instead the digital of the movie Tron. In Tron, they had to pretend to be digital because the technology was not yet there. In this cd, Stereolab creates a unique sound by combining elevator Pop and cool Jazz with fledgling technology aspiring to be digital. As with other Stereolab recordings, the vocals are more rhythm instruments than melodic content and the beautiful harmonies combined with a dead pan but innocent attitude are very refreshing. I remember being amazed when I saw Stereolab live in Amsterdam that there were not banks of computers everywhere and that the repetition of the recordings was played live with vintage instruments. This new CD demonstrates maturity over other recording that does not seem to be afraid to be timeless. Every great once in a while someone makes a record that you feel when you listen to it that it was made just for you. Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night is just that.
