My son has an extremely wide foot due to achondroplasia dwarfism. So wide in fact we usually size up just so the width fits. He had had a size 1w in a different style of Stride Rite with a double velcro strap those just plain wore out so it was time for a new pair. I saw these came in XW and decided to stick with the same size. I like these shoes. These have the single velcro with the bungy type lace. At first they were a little hard to get on his foot but I figured they just needed to be stretched out a bit. After a week of wear they are much easier to slip on. There are definately wide enough but I didn't notice a huge difference between the wide and extra wide. If you are decided between a wide or an xw I would go with the XW as there wan't a huge difference.
